Portal Revolution

Difficulty : 1.5/5 (Easy)
Global : 3.5/5 (Very Good)

Portal Revolution is the new “big mod” for the Portal series.
While the other mods really tried to create something worthy of a successor (Portal Stories: Mel), harder puzzles (Rexaura) or original mechanics (Portal Reloaded), Portal Revolution plays it safe with easier puzzles and a structure that barely changes from Portal 2.

You can only place one portal during half of the game. That’s a mechanic that was seen in the previous games but was very underdeveloped, and it’s nice to see good puzzles that exploit it better. Unfortunately, once you get the second portal, the game can’t hide behind the “you only have one portal” anymore, and the puzzles are just too easy.
I’m not saying puzzles have to be ultra hard, but I was hoping for a new challenge that goes at least beyond what Portal 2 had to offer.
There are new mechanics but it really feels like they didn’t really know what to do with them, and only a few puzzles use them. There are lots of walking sections, they are not always interesting and I think trading a bit of them for more puzzles that better explore the new mechanics would’ve been better.

Well, too easy or too hard, as long as it’s Portal, you’ll always have fun. And Revolution does a good job at that : good story, the adventure through the whole Aperture facility, the silly companions/dialogues, good voice acting… everything is here, and done well.
I couldn’t say whether trying too hard to be Portal 2 is positive or negative… it may not be original but it’s so effective, so who cares?

Portal Revolution is a tribute to Portal 2. You won’t find groundbreaking new puzzles/mechanics, but a work of love for one of the best games.

And we’re all in for some more Portal 2.
